Trails – Butalelbún community

“More than just a tourist product, more than emotions and beautiful landscapes, going into the corners of the Pewen and its people, by foot, horse or bicycle, is a life experience that gets deep into our feelings of pride, of belonging to a country in which original people still live, still fight, and who want to keep in our eyes the fruits of their identity, resisting and surviving. By means of a simple trip, we must work with them not just for the success of a micro-enterprise, but for the recognition of a culture, way beyond their tracks, and see together new and better alternatives for the future, in peace”

Rodrigo Arcos, Geographer

The tracks of Butalelbun community, located on the border with Argentina, are special in that they go to the deepest Pewenche territories of Alto Bio Bio. The community has four tracks open for visitors, which can be travelled separately or together, which is highly recommended for a better experience in this amazing territory.

Menokochenke Trail

Menokochenke is a huge cave of high cultural significance for the Pewenche people, a place of refuge and traditional stories.  The trip along the track of the same name, invites one to live the ancestral experience of travelling to the highlands of the veranadas.

From the lowlands of the community, the path winds slowly towards the Menokochenke plateau, surrounded at all times by magnificent Araucaria forests (Monkey Puzzle Trees), with breathtaking views of the Butalelbun Valley. On the plateau the slope is less steep, and leads to Pta Ko, a traditional veranada that offers a refuge and a rustic camp for the visitors, who are welcomed to share the life of the veranada.

From here, visiting the magnificent waterfalls is a must, as they offer a refreshing break from the hot summer days.
