Cauñicu community

Our community is located at approximately 20 kilometres from Villa Ralco, and 70 from Santa Barbara, in the Queuco Valley. The name of our community comes from the word Kawelloko, which means “horse in the water” in Chedungún, our language. It extends from the Queuco River until the Cauñicú Lagoon in the highlands.

The landscape of our community is dominated by abundant native forests, with a wide diversity of trees like oaks, raulíes, radales, coigües, and in the higher lands the magnificent Araucarias, lengas and ñirres. Cauñicú Lagoon outstands because its beauty, and also because its cultural importance for our community.

Cauñicu Lagoon Tour

As in all the other communities in this valley, our houses are located close to the Queuco River, both by the road and in the area leading to the Tricauco mountains. There are also some families that live in higher lands, accessible just walking or by horse.

Our main economic activity is the breeding of cattle, in particular goats and pork. We have very few lands suitable for agriculture, so there are just small family orchards that produce a wide variety of naturally produced foods.

In our community the Ptra Lafken (Big Lagoon) track is implemented, which goes into the valley following the Cauñicú stream until reaching the Lagoon of the same name. It gives an excellent opportunity to share with us, the Pewenche people, in a perfect combination of nature, adventure and intercultural exchange.
We will be waiting for you!
